Adolescent gambling

 Main findings:

  • 29.6% of Years 7-12 students reported they had never gambled. 60.4% reported infrequent gambling, and 10% said they gambled weekly or more.
  • Participations rates were highest amongst Year 11 and 12, with the strongest increase occurring after year 10.
  • Private card games are the most popular gambling type, followed by bingo/scratch cards, racing, and sports betting. internet gambling is one of the last popular forms.
  • Participation rates vary little in terms of gender, although males were more likely than females to be frequent gamblers.
  • 72% of young people’s parents gamble. There was significant association between the frequency of adolescent and parental gambling involvement.
